Rapstar J. Cole

Rapstar J. Cole is set to play in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Jermaine Lamarr Cole, an American rapper, songwriter, producer, and singer, recently signed a contract with the Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

On Thursday, May 19,2022. The Canadian Elite Basketball League announced on Twitter the signing of the singer. A few hours later, the Scarborough Sooting Stars also posted on Instagram that the rapper is now back into basketball and would play as a 6’3 guard in the upcoming season.

The Scarborough Shooting Stars team was announced last summer as a new Canadian Elite Basketball league expansion club. The rapper played basketball when he was in high school where he played in North Carolina at Sanford High School, but one way or the other, he had to go for his music career while putting his basketball career on hold.

Last year, the 37-year old Rapstar was previously signed into the Basketball Africa league where he played professionally with the Rwanda Patriots, in which in three games he recorded 5 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds, but had to leave the tournament against play-offs as a result of “family duties”.

The award-winning rapper’s name was listed among the 13 players’ names that were released by the Rwandan Patriots head coach, Alan Major, where Cole played in Jersey number 15 to represent the team in the Basketball Africa league.

The Basketball African League is headed by Amadou Gallo Fall, who is also the president of the league. He stated last year that the league was being supported by the International Basketball Federation and the National Basketball League. The league was also said to be the first one that’s not in the US to be supported and sponsored by the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The Scarborough Shooting Stars’ first game for this season is to take place on Thursday, May 26, 2022, in which they will visit the Guelph Nighthawks. Their first home game is also set to happen on June 4, where they will play against the Hamilton Honey Badgers.

After Cole plays basketball for the second time in his basketball career this season in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, there’s another game which is to take place at home on June 7 versus the Newfoundland Growlers before the rapper will be able to play before going on tour. After that, the rapper is to begin his tour in New York on June 10. When he begins his tour, the shooting stars will still have a total of 15 more games left to play.

Last year, Cole’s performance in the basketball Africa league was not very popular and it attracted a lot of controversy. The current Basketball Africa league’s leading scorer and Morocco AS Sale guard, Terrell Stoglin, who earlier played his college hoops at Maryland, found fault with the rapper’s place in the tournament.

Terrell said putting Cole in that position to play basketball was disrespectful and totally unworthy as someone who had spent years playing basketball with experience deserved the spot he took.

The Scarborough Shooting Stars are part-owned by Nicholas Carino, known as “Niko”. He is one of the co-founders of the famed clothing and lifestyle brand OVO (October’s Very Own).

Hours after the announcement of the rapper joining basketball again, Cole received support from the Canadian rapper Drake, who he featured on a song named “In the Morning”. The song was released in 2010 on J. Cole’s third mixtape “Friday Night Lights” and was also released on Cole’s first studio album titled “Cole World: The Sideline Story” in 2011. Drake partner and manager OVO Niko is also one of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) team’s owners.

The staff of the Shooting Stars are Jamaal Magloire, an ex-NBA player who happens to be the Toronto Raptors’ basketball development consultant and community ambassador. He is also the team’s vice president and senior adviser. There’s also Brady Heslip, a former sharpshooting Canadian basketball national team member, who is the team’s general manager.

Last year, The Basketball Africa league was to run till May 30, 2021, with the rapper’s team playing in the tournament’s opening game. The first play with the Rwandan Patriots took place on a Sunday against Nigeria’s River Hoopers, two days after releasing his latest album, “The Off-season.”

In 2020, the rapper won a Grammy award for the Best Rap Song for “A Lot” by 21 Savage featuring J. Cole and has had several BET Awards to his name. He also has six platinum albums. He has a YouTube music award and a Billboard music award for Best Live Performance in 2015. He also won the iHeartRadio award that took place on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 for album of the year for 2021 with his sixth studio album “The Off-season” that was released in 2021. He has also produced songs for various artists.

Cole released his last album, “The Off-Season,” a year ago. The album is said to be his sixth studio album and has currently had 60 million streams since it’s release on Spotify and is said to have officially sold out over 288,000 copies in its first week of sales. The studio album has also sold over 1 million units in the US since its release in 2021.

The Dreamville rapper released his sixth studio album on Friday, May 14, 2021. The album contains a total of 12 tracks and has a total duration of about 41 minutes. The album featured various artists like 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Diddy, Bas, 6Lack, Cam’ron, Morray, Lil Jon and many others.

In the 12 tracks featured in the album, there was one of the songs titled “interlude” where he honoured the late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Other tracks recorded on the album include: 95 South, my life, the climb back, punchin’ the clock and the remaining ones.

A few days after releasing the album last year, Cole told Slam Magazine what the album title “The Off-season” meant. Cole said, “The Off-Season symbolizes the work that it takes to get to the highest height.” The Off-Season represents the many hours, months, and years it takes to get to top form… I’m doing all this work to be at peace with it. If I never do another album, I’m cool. That’s the reason for all of this, so I know that I put everything on the table. I left everything on the table.

Cole, a rapper and producer, must balance his basketball career with his current music career. He might miss some games in the upcoming season, scheduled to commence on Thursday, May 26, against the Guelph Nighthawks, as he begins touring on June 10.

Cole has signed a contract with the Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. The league’s training camp will begin this week, with the first game slated for May 26. The Scarborough Shooting Stars will meet the Guelph Nighthawks, but it has not been determined whether Cole will play in the first game.
